Danielle Rocheleau Salaz received a BA in Japan studies from Teikyo Loretto Heights University and an MA in Japanese language and civilization from CU. During her master’s program, she attended the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, an intensive one-year language program. She has been the executive director of CAS since 2005, and was the assistant to the consul general at the Consulate General of Japan from 1999 to 2005.
Her research focus has been on the use of loanwords in Japanese; overseas Japanese (kikokushijo); and international academic exchange and intercultural communication. She has significant experience with administration of international programming and activities in the academic and public sectors. Her publications include an entry in The Encyclopedia of Modern Asia (Levinson, Christensen, et al., Eds., 2002) and “A Morphological Study and Annotated Bibliography of English Loanwords in Contemporary Japanese: Conventional Scholarly Theories and Their Real-World Applications,” presented at the International Conference on Communication and Cultural (Ex)Change, International Association for Intercultural Studies, in Hong Kong in 2001.
Salaz has served on selection panels for MEXT scholarships through the Japanese Consulate and the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund through the Institute of International Education. She also served as the chair of the National Alumni Council of Youth For Understanding – USA.
